With the holidays in everyone’s rear view mirror and the new year underway, it’s also the start of the 2013 Legislative Session. Gearing up for the legislative session may consume your mind for many months leading up to it, but it’s easy to forget that your supporters may not be as tuned in as you are.

Here are some ways you can make sure that your organization and supporters are primed and ready to go:

Preview Email

A legislative preview email is a great chance to fill your supporters in on which bills/topics you will be working on this year and what your organization’s goals are. Your supporters will know what to expect, and it also gives them a chance to study up on those key issues. Here is a great example of one of these emails, from Maryland League of Conservation Voters:

Make sure your database is up to date

Make sure your legislative database is up to date with a political district append. If your organization sends action alerts, you want to be sure they are going to the right people. With new district lines this year, your data may no longer be accurate and it’s important that your supporters’ messages are being seen.

Ask for donations

The beginning of a new legislative session is a great time to ask for donations. Not just from your regular donors, but from your activists as well. People are feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world at this time of year, and your organization is a great place for them to put their money where their mouth is.
