2 Night Retreat - Centering Prayer Directed by Mark Dannenfelser, MA, LPC Centering Prayer is a method of prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplation by cultivating interior silence and purity of heart. Centering Prayer was distilled from the profound and ancient teachings of the Christian contemplative heritage first evident in the early Desert Fathers and Mothers. The method, as taught by Trappist monk, Fr. Thomas Keating, O.C.S.O., uses silence and attention to encourage the development of alert receptivity of God's presence and action within us. Like the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Centering Prayer has as it’s main focus the deepening of our relationship with the living Christ. One obstacle to a deepening relationship with Christ is the lack of interior freedom because of our attachments. Ignatius counsels us toward radical detachment and Centering Prayer is one practical method for increasing our ability to detach, so that we might “let go and let God.” Mark is founding director of the Mindfulness Center of Atlanta where he teaches Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cancer Care. He is a licensed professional counselor in private practice and an adjunct lecturer in the graduate theology program at Spring Hill College. Mark is a certified spiritual director, a registered yoga teacher, and a Contemplative Outreach commissioned presenter of the Centering Prayer method.
