Heritage Pastured Poultry Production: Opportunities and Challenges

This workshop is being presented by NCAT, the Mission Mountain Food Enterprise Center and Salish Kootenai College; it is funded by the USDA Risk Management Agency.

The keynote speaker will be Jim Adkins, founder of the International Center for Poultry. The center, which is based in Old Fort, North Carolina, is dedicated to educating people about standard and heritage bred poultry as well as sustainable farming. The title of his speech will be "Can a Heritage Poultry Market Thrive in Montana?"

NCAT Economics Specialist Jeff Schahczenski will review the resource book for pastured poultry and discuss the market and economic potential for pastured poultry products.

Jan Tusick of the Mission Mountain Food Enterprise Center will review poultry processing and HACCP systems.

After the speakers, participants will be able to join in a tour of Rough Diamond Farm, a family-owned pastured poultry  operation near Great Falls that is currently developing a breeding stock program for Ranger Chickens.
