Medication Assisted Treatment Course Overview Opioid abuse and addiction (e.g., heroin, OxyContin) remains a critical national public health concern. In 2002, tablet formulations of the medication buprenorphine were approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of opioid addiction. In order to prepare the field to effectively integrate this new treatment, the Buprenorphine Treatment Blending Team developed an awareness training to disseminate information and enhance awareness among multidisciplinary (non-physician) addiction professionals about buprenorphine treatment. This training will focus on enhancing treatment providers’ understanding of the role of buprenorphine in treating opioid addiction. The training will provide an overview of the research related to the use of buprenorphine for both adults and young adults, as well as the practical issues related to providing coordinated care for individuals utilizing buprenorphine as a treatment intervention. This training will also provide information about the use of the opioid antagonist medication naltrexone (oral and extended-release) in the treatment of opioid addiction. When
