CANCELED - Chaun Webster - Third Space Imaginary: Zines & Other Potentially Transformational Media - Pre-registration required This two-hour workshop introduces third-space theory as a paradigm for examining virtual and material intersections in art production, zines being one material example. Key questions will be raised about how traditional production forms in literature and other media keep communities of color from determining which stories have value and what stories are even legible in our political discourse. Workshop attendees will have an opportunity to break into small groups to discuss case studies and work together to build strategies in viable multi-sector alternatives. Pre-registration required. Chaun Webster is a Poet, Publisher and Graphic Designer in no particular order. Webster’s poetry finds its influences in the intersections of the Black Arts Movement and Jazz, the Concrete Poetry Tradition and Grafitti. In 2009 he launched Free Poet’s Press, a small publishing company, to create a self-determining space for art production in Black and Brown communities. As guerrilla media, Free Poets Press utilizes low-tech production methods and local distribution to disseminate radical ideas through the arts. Webster was awarded a Verve Grant for Spoken Word Poetry, which led to the production of HaiCOUP: a fieldguide in guerrilla (po)ethics, with Twin Cities Poet’s Marissa Carr, Ibrahima Kaba, and Jake Virden. Through Kickstarter he raised funds to release the RE-Scripted Chapbook Series. In 2013 Webster received a Neighborhood Partnership Initiative Grant through the University of Minnesota's Center for Urban Regional Affairs (CURA) to develop a critical literacy initiative in the Cleveland Neighborhood of North Minneapolis.
