Wildlife Refuge Approved with Help of Sierra Club Action Alert System

The Sierra Club - Lone Star chapter, a client of thedatabank, has announced that the Neches River Wildlife Refuge has been approved. Achieving this important goal required the organization to educate members about the refuge, and mobilize them to contact legislators.

The approval of the refuge depended on the status of a reservoir called Fastrill, proposed for the same location by Dallas Water Utilities and the Upper Neches Municipal Water Authority. After researching the need for a reservoir in that location, The Sierra Club found that Fastrill was not necessary for at least 50 years.

The Sierra Club sent out an action alert to their members, prompting them to contact their legislator and tell them about the importance of implementing the wildlife refuge. The online action alert allowed them to send a sample message with the click of a button, or write their own.

The 25,000 acre refuge, proposed by the director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and now approved, will protect the rare bottomland hardwood forest in that area, while at the same time offer hunting, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities for Texas ' growing population.

The Sierra Club has seen many victories through the use of thedatabank's online action alert system. It is quick and simple to use, making it more likely for people to take action on important issues, even if they are busy.
