First Credit Card Data Protection Law in the Country Passed with Help from Minnesota Credit Union Network
There is good news, though, if you live in Minnesota . Governor Pawlenty has signed into law the Plastic Card Security Act, which shifts the costs associated with data breaches from financial institutions to the retailers who mishandle consumers' private financial information. As a result of this increased liability, retailers should feel more pressured to protect consumers' personal information. Minnesota is the first state in the country to pass this type of law. Minnesota Credit Union Network's Grassroots Education & Action Team (GREAT) is thanking their supporters for their effort in helping to get this law passed. GREAT sent out email action alerts, powered by thedatabank, asking their members to contact their elected officials and urge them to support the Plastic Card Security Act. The act overwhelming passed the House and Senate with votes of 122-4 and 63-1, respectively. How does Minnesota Credit Union's action alert system work? They send out an email to their supporters, urging them to visit a page on their website where they can contact their legislators. The action page provides the activist with a sample message that they can send to their legislator (which is automatically appended, based on their address).
