Beyond Brochures
Most people know that to protect the environment they should recycle more, water their lawns less, get out of the car and take a multitude of other steps to reduce their ecological footprint.
But as often as not, the actions people take are not consistent with what they know to be true about the state of the environment. In fact, research demonstrates that simply providing information usually has little or no effect on what people do .
But if not brochures, then what? Over the last several years a new approach - community based social marketing - has emerged as an effective alternative for delivering programs to change envirnomental behavior.

Introductory workshop
This full-day workshop introduces the concept of community based social marketing and provides participants with some basic knowledge that will help them deliver effective programs. The workshop covers four key areas:
- How to identify the barriers to a desired behavior
- How to use behavior change " tools " to design more effective programs
- How (and why) to pilot a test program
- How to evaluate the impact of a program once it has been implemented
Case studies are used to make social marketing concepts - such as gaining commitment or using prompts - concrete, and frequent opportunities are provided for discu ssion.
Advanced workshop
Building on the introductory workshop and Dr. McKenzie-Mohr's book, this two-day workshop provides an in-depth exposure to community based social marketing and provides participants with the knowledge they need to deliver cost-effecitve programs within their own work contexts. As an advanced workshop, participants will have extensive opportunity to discuss the application of community based social marketing to their own programs. To ensure ample opportunity for discussion, the workshop will be limited to 50 participants.
