In Spite of a Broken Collarbone, Reasons to be Thankful

Today it's good to be back in the office, after spending most of the past week at home with a broken collarbone.

The accident happened when I was riding my bicycle to work and encountered a Parks Department vehicle blocking the path.  Not slowing down enough, I hopped off the trail and onto the grass to get around the truck, when a smallish branch on the ground caught my front tire and sent me flying.  I remember thinking as I was going down that this may hurt more than the average spill.  Funny how we while away the milliseconds in such situations.

My helmet prevented head injury, but the x-ray showed my right clavicle snapped in two like one of my son's drumsticks.  According to the bone doctor, I'll be ready to bike again by next spring.

This week I'm thankful for my family and others who help me do regular things (like getting my arm in and out of a sleeve); for the resilience of the human body which allows me to type with both hands just a few days after the accident (that is, if I first lift my right hand onto the keyboard with my left); for thedatabank staff who keep things running in the office when I'm out; and of course for our customers who provide us with such uplifting work.  And for lessons learned: the magic that transforms hindsight into foresight.  (Note to self: never underestimate the power of a single downed branch.)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Mark
