Oh baby, check out these upgrades

We have three upgrades to announce this month:

1) Due to a recent upgrade to thedatabank, the download screen now allows the user to download individual uncompressed files, in addition to the zipped file that bundles multiple files together.  This is helpful for Mac users and others who have difficulty with ZIP-format files.

2) When a member in a client database has related "household" type relationships, the new default behavior on the member edit form is for the "Update related records" checkboxes to be UNCHECKED.  This behavior has less destructive potential than when they were CHECKED because now the system won't change addresses and phones in related records unless explicitly told to do so.  (The setting can still be changed to CHECKED at a client's request.)

3) We have implemented a "password" mailmerge field for text-only emails, at the request of the Georgia Bar Association and others.  If the body contains a placeholder of "[PASSWORD]" then each member's password will replace it in the outgoing messages.  If the member's password is blank, the word "(blank)" will be substituted.  The list of mergeable fields on the mailing page (click Email under the Selection menu) includes the new "[PASSWORD]" field.

Tip du Jour

A new addition to the user guide

Selecting records based on "Relationships" brings some unique and sometimes confusing options to the search process.  Follow this link to some examples that will help you understand these options.

Guess who's "in the family way"

Yup, it's me.  I'm expecting my first child in February.  Everyone who sees my round belly is asking the same question: "How do you feel?"  I suspect you don't want to hear the full answer, which includes a litany of small ailments and irritants, so let's just say I feel fine.  Really, it's been easy so far.

Pregnancy seems especially poignant this time of year, with the many holidays that focus on hope, deliverance, light out of darkness, renewal.  I am looking forward to being a mother, and I appreciate all of the good wishes I have received from clients and colleagues. It's an honor to bring a new life into the world...but it's an imperfect world, and we still have a lot of change to strive for.

That's one of the reasons that, after a maternity leave, I plan to come back to thedatabank and continue my work here.  We're still figuring out exactly who will do what while I'm gone, but rest assured that you will be in good hands.  We'll keep you posted.

Karen
