Take Action Now to Stop Alabama Copycat Bill

House Judiciary Subcommittee Considers Alabama Copycat Bill Today!

Representative Shipley and Senator Beavers are attempting to import one of the most controversial provisions of Alabama’s HB56 and make it Tennessee state law.

HB2191/SB2176 would criminalize everyday activities and Good Samaritan behavior by making it a felony to drive a car with a passenger who lacks immigration status.

Under this bill, a church leader driving a group of kids to Vacation Bible School could be convicted of a felony and have the church van confiscated, if one of those children happens to have an expired immigration visa. Similarly, church property and assets could be seized for housing homeless immigrants in the winter. This bill would create a climate of suspicion of anyone who looks foreign-born, as even a carpool to work could put everyday Tennesseans in legal jeopardy.

Deadline for action: 2/17/2012.
