Stand up for the middle class!

Employee Free Choice Act

The Employee Free Choice Act, supported by a bipartisan coalition in Congress, would enable working people to bargain for better benefits, wages and working conditions by restoring workers freedom to choose for themselves whether to join a union. It would:

* Remove current obstacles to employees who want collective bargaining.

* Guarantee that workers who can choose collective bargaining are able to achieve a contract.

* Allow employees to form unions by signing cards authorizing union representation.

Paid Sick Days Now! Pass the Healthy Families Act

Healthy Families Act

Please urge your U.S. Representative to co-sponsor the Healthy Families Act. This important legislation would guarantee up to seven paid sick days per year for workers to recover from their own illness or care for a sick family member.

Working people shouldn't be forced to risk their jobs to take care of themselves or their families. Yet, nearly half of all workers do not have a single paid sick day to care for themselves or a family member when they are ill.

Swine Flu, a potentially pandemic virus, has become a public health emergency in the U.S. The CDC is recommending that if people feel sick, they should see a doctor and stay home. Without paid sick days, working people do not have the option to stay home without losing much-needed income or possibly their jobs. Most often, workers have no choice but to go to work sick, risking the spread of illness.

Right now, we cannot take this chance. The Healthy Families Act will provide everyone the chance to stay home, ensuring that Swine Flu does not continue to spread and turn into a full-blown pandemic.

Equal Pay for Equal Work

Paycheck Fairness Act

A much needed update of the 45-year-old Equal Pay Act, the Paycheck Fairness Act is a comprehensive bill that would create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law, empower women to negotiate for equal pay, and strengthen federal outreach, education and enforcement efforts.

The bill would also deter wage discrimination by strengthening penalties for equal pay violations and by prohibiting retaliation against workers who ask about employers' wage practices or disclose their own wages. This critical piece of legislation can help create a climate where pay discrimination is not tolerated, and give the courts the enforcement tools it needs to make real progress on pay equity.

Women's Rights are Human Rights!

Prioritize the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is a landmark international agreement that affirms principles of fundamental human rights and equality for women around the world. It offers countries a practical blueprint to promote basic rights and to open opportunities for women and girls in all areas of society.

However, the United States continues to be one of only 7 countries in the world that has not ratified CEDAW. As women and men who believe in the basic rights of women and girls worldwide the right to live free from violence, the ability to go to school, and access to the political system we need President Obama to send a strong and urgent signal to the Senate that ratification of CEDAW this year is vital.

We are within striking distance of CEDAW ratification, but the window of opportunity is rapidly closing. We need President Obama to show leadership in advancing women and girls' rights by supporting CEDAW now.

Deadline for action: 1/1/2011.
